There are so many different ways to get rid of your old car. One option that is often overlooked is donating your car to charity. Sure, you can probably make some cash if you trade it in or have a junk service pick it up. But that wouldn’t make you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside for doing something nice, now would it?
If you’re looking to donate your old car, there are a ton of great charities out there that could put your car to good use. They sometimes use it for their own transportation needs, and other times they sell it for parts and use the money to fund their services. Either way, donating your old car can get you a little good will. You’ll be able to rest easy knowing you did something good to help others out.
Goodwill is a pro in the car donation front. They make it easy to drop off a car, or you can have the vehicle picked up by their team. When you donate to Goodwill, they typically auction the car off for sale, depending on the condition. They’ll then use the money and put it right back into the community in your local area.
2. Wheels for Wishes
If you’re a fan of the Make-A-Wish foundation, then this is a charity you’ll want to support. Wheels for Wishes gets rid of old cars and then gives that money to the Make-A-Wish foundation. The money helps grant wishes of kids with life-threatening diseases.
3. Habitat for Humanity
If you donate to Habitat for Humanity, they’ll sell off your car and use the proceeds to support their cause. That means the money will be going toward helping people build a better life. A lot of times that includes helping families build homes after a natural disaster, or helping revitalize a neighborhood that needs some extra love.
4. Cars Helping Veterans
This charity is all about helping those who served our country. They sell used cars and then funnel that money to other charities focused on helping veterans like Purple Heart and Paralyzed Veterans of America.
Public radio helps keep people informed and educated on the things going on in the world. You can donate your car to National Public Radio and help support their work. They will pick up your car from you, so there’s hardly any work required, and hardly any reason not to donate.
Donating a car can be a simple, hassle-free process. Plus, don’t forget that you typically get a tax break when you do this good deed. So why not do something different with your car this time?
Be aware that before you take the leap and donate your car, you’ll want to make sure you have all your ducks in a row. Document the value of your car, ask for a receipt, and fill out all necessary paperwork based on your car’s value. Check out this full list of tips here. All of those steps will ensure your donation is in the clear as far as the IRS is concerned.
