We all know the run-of-the-mill tailgating games. You’ve got washers, cornhole (or bags, for some people), KanJam and horseshoes. These classic games will (and let’s be real, should) make an appearance. I mean, would it even be a tailgate if you didn’t bring out the bags?
But if you’re feeling adventurous and looking to spice up this year’s tailgating season, be bold and try some other tailgating activities.
1. Have a cook-off
Everyone usually brings a fun dish to the tailgate, right? How about this year you add a little competition to it! Bring a sheet of paper and write down what everyone brought (anonymously, of course!). Have people write their vote on what they liked the best. Tally it up at the end, and you have your tailgate cook-off champion!
Maybe they win a make-shift trophy, or maybe they are exempt from bringing something to the next tailgate. Whatever the prize may be, a little competition makes for a fun new challenge, and more delicious food.
2. Make a magnetic tic-tac-toe game
Your car is basically a giant magnet. Why not take advantage of that while you’re tailgating from it! Besides these other tips for turning your car into a tailgating machine, rev up your tailgating games by creating a larger than life tic-tac-toe board on the side of your car.
You can buy a magnetic sheet from most craft stores. Cut that sheet into your X’s and O’s. Don’t forget your painter's tape to make the board on a door of the car. Once you’re set up, you’re ready to go for some friendly games of tic-tac-toe.
3. Embrace craft time
Craft time isn’t just for kindergartners anymore. Set aside a crafting space and have some supplies for whatever craft you’re in the mood for. This is great for tailgates with kids or adults who are kids at heart. Just turn on your tailgating tunes and you’ll be having a blast!
Try out this pompom craft if you’re looking for something spirited. Buy tissue paper in your team’s colors and bring your scissors and tape. Cut out the paper in small strips and tape them together at the bottom. In no time you’ll have a pompom to sport for the rest of the day.
4. Play football bingo
Is it just us, or is Bingo making a comeback? Make a bingo board the night before your tailgate and print out plenty of extras. There’s a ton of programs online to generate bingo boards for you automatically.
If you’re listening or watching the game, have boxes about field goals, blocked kicks, and false starts. If you’re tailgating before the game, try fun things that may happen at your tailgate like someone plays a Beyoncé song or that person who is always late rolls in at the last minute. As the day goes on, everyone can mark off the squares as they happen. The person who gets bingo first gets a prize!
Don’t spend another year doing the same old tailgate games. Freshen up the fun with one of these ideas and your friends will thank you.
