Missouri seems especially lucky in the travel department. The state boasts amazing museums and parks in both Kansas City and St. Louis. And for the outdoor enthusiasts out there, Missouri is lucky to have a top-notch state park system with numerous well-known hot spots to see. If you’re looking for a state that has it all, look no further. Here are some of the top places to visit when you’re planning a road trip in the Show-Me State.
1. The National WWI Museum and Memorial (Kansas City)
History buffs, we have the dream destination for you. The National WWI Museum and Memorial in Kansas City is regularly ranked one of the top museums in the country. It boasts one of the largest collections of WWI artifacts in the world and is a great place to explore with the whole family. Make sure to see the life-size trench and tank as you learn about the people and artifacts from the war.
2. St. Louis Zoo
The St. Louis Zoo is known to be one of the best zoos in the entire country. And for good reason, too. This zoo has it all, from lions and tigers to bears, oh my! It hosts 16,000 animals, so there’s a creature for everyone to enjoy.
The children’s zoo is great for smaller kids to get up close and personal with animals. And of course, a trip around the zoo on the train is a must-do activity for young and old alike. Oh, and did we mention entrance to the zoo is free?
3. Echo Bluffs State Park (Eminence)
Echo Bluffs is Missouri’s newest state park. The 476-acre park is open year round for outdoor adventurers to enjoy. The park was named after the largest sheer bluff of the property, Echo Bluff. Just below that bluff are the crystal clear waters of Sinking Creek.
The park has a variety of accommodations, including a brand new lodge and plenty of cabins. And then, of course there are campgrounds for those wanting to enjoy a more nature-focused experience. Check out these vehicles made for camping, and you’ll be set. Like all Missouri State Parks, access to the park is free while the accommodations may have fees.
4. Silver Dollar City (Branson)
Looking for more of a thrill? Silver Dollar City has you covered! The theme park has plenty of rides to keep you entertained for days. There’s also a water park if you happen to visit on a hot summer day and a cruise showboat for some fun on the water.
After you’re done at the theme park, you can head to one of the numerous family-friendly shows or restaurants. Silver Dollar City is a hidden gem and a must-do in Missouri.
5. Wonders of Wildlife Museum and Aquarium (Springfield)
This new museum and aquarium has over 1.5 miles of galleries to explore. The man leading the charge for the museum was Johnny Morris, the founder of Bass Pro Shops. He created the museum to honor and educate those who love the outdoors and all the animals that go along with it.
The massive museum is broken up into mammal “Wildlife Galleries” and the “Aquarium Adventure,” and you’re sure to see some amazing creatures. It is open 365 days a year, so no matter when you want to visit you’ll have a chance to explore all the museum has to offer.
