Making Sense of Your Car Insurance Documents with Say

You may have heard that here at Say we’re all about ditching the jargon and giving you clear-cut, transparent car insurance. In the name of being transparent, here’s a quick guide on understanding our car insurance documents.

1. Auto declaration

This is a fancy word for the first page of your auto policy. You can find quite a few details on this page, including:

  • Your policy number
  • Effective date and expiration date
  • Who is covered (like their names, ages, and marital status)
  • Covered vehicles (and how they’re financed)
  • Coverages and their limits
  • Discounts you are receiving

The main reason you’d want to pull this document out (from that super safe spot we know you keep it) is if you need to review your coverage. We suggest reviewing your policy once every six months, or at least once a year. And we’re not just saying that because we’re an insurance company. It’s a good idea to check out exactly what you’re covered for, and update your policy if you had any big life happenings that warrant a change.

If you’re a Say customer, you can find this auto declaration and the rest of your policy files online in your My Say account. Your account also has a section that goes over what you're covered for and the limits, in an easy-to-understand way. 2. ID card

This is one of the most important documents you get from an insurance company. It’s your proof of insurance. This is what you’d hand over to someone if you get in an accident, or what you’d pass along to a police officer if you get pulled over.

It has information on who is covered and what cars are on your policy. It also has that very important expiration date so you know when your insurance expires.

Here at Say, we provide digital ID cards that you can access online at any time. If you have a printed copy, you’ll want to keep that in your car or on your person at all times. (PS: digital cards work just fine in all states except for Massachusetts and New Mexico. If you’re traveling to or through one of those, you’ll want to print out a copy just to be safe. We know you’re always driving super safe though!)

3. Rate changes

These documents are created when your auto insurance rate has changed. In most cases, that change is because you were in an accident, and your rate increased because of it.

These rate change documents don’t have anything to do with when you make edits to your account. They’re only generated when we have to make an edit to your policy on the back end.

4. Payment notices

These are your run-of-the-mill billing notices that are about all things payment related. They could be about your automatic payment schedule, a notification about your automatic payment, or about something related to a returned or late payment.

5. “Other” documents

This category is a catch-all for all your ‘other’ Say documents. Think things like your discount info, consumer report notices, or claims estimates. If none of the other categories seem like they will have the document you’re looking for, you should check here. It’s like Monica’s closet from Friends. You know the one where she kept everything she couldn’t organize somewhere else?

More potential categories

After those main categories, there are some groupings of documents that you won’t always see. These categories will show when you have notices that fall into them.

6. Correspondence

This is a small group of documents that will show up if we’re having trouble emailing you. You’ll probably see a document saying we’re either having emails bounce back or that your email address is invalid. Here’s where we get on our soapbox saying it’s always important to make sure your email is up to date on your profile page of your My Say account. Okay, soapbox talk done!

7. Cancellation

The cancellation section is exactly what it sounds like. It will house any letters or documents about a canceled account. That could be a cancellation letter, termination letter, or something about a non-renewal, like if you move out of one of our five Say states and had to cancel your policy.

We know there’s a lot going on with your documents, but we promise they are all important. The more you know about your documents, the more helpful they can be for you. And the more you can really take control of your car insurance.
