Matchmaking: How to Choose Your Auto Insurance Soulmate

With all the different options for auto insurance out there, it’s no surprise that it’s a struggle to pick the right one. Or maybe you’ve been avoiding the decision by sticking with your same provider for years. In fact, about 33% of drivers don’t shop around for new car insurance.

Looking around for the best deal and a good fit is important. It’s a big decision because not only are you paying for your auto insurance every month, but you want to be sure you and your loved ones have the coverage you need.

When you’re looking for the perfect auto insurance match, make sure to do your research to find the perfect partner. After all, you’ll be with them for months, and potentially years.

1. Compare prices

We don’t mean to be all about the money, but we know that money does matter. Get a few different quotes and see how the prices stack up.

But, be sure to also be looking at the amount of coverage you get from each provider. A super cheap monthly payment may seem like a great idea, but if you realize you’re getting substantially less coverage from them too, they may not be worth it. A few extra dollars a month could go a long way to help pay any costs if you happen to get into an accident. That small bit of extra money up front could mean hundreds less out of pocket after an accident.

2. Check out their customer service

Nothing can ruin a day quite like a car accident. We’ve all been there. That’s why you’ll want to look into the customer service of your insurance options. Some big things to look for are:

  • A call center open past regular office hours (who really has time to call while they’re at work?)
  • 24/7 roadside assistance
  • Online chat

3. Search for easy online access

Everyone’s busy these days. From soccer practice to hot yoga after work, there always seems to be something. A valuable feature to look for in your provider is if you’re able to access your account online.

Can you download or print your insurance cards if yours happens to fall out of your wallet at the gas station? Can you start a claim online and skip the long waits on a phone call? Can you update your coverage online with a simple click? These are all things Say offers through our online portal, My Say, and are things you can look for in whatever provider you choose. Online access is a big way to save you time, so don’t overlook that perk.

4. Look into discounts

We know we mentioned the whole money thing already, but make sure you check out what discounts each provider offers. We get that paying for car insurance each month can be a bummer as you watch your hard earned dollars leave your account, so make sure that whoever you go with at least has some decent discounts to help offset that. Some helpful discounts to look for are:

  • Pay-in-full (Save money just for paying all at once. How easy is that?)
  • Anti-theft (Most cars these days come equipped with anti-theft devices, so this is an easy one.)
  • Paperless (Save trees and save money. It’s a win-win.)
  • Advance Purchase (Just a week of planning ahead can save you a lot in the long-run. Kudos to the early bird!)

PS: Say offers all of those discounts..wink wink. Check out our other discounts here.

Never jump into an auto insurance relationship without a little background research. I mean, you wouldn’t start dating someone without a little digging right? I’m pretty sure that’s what social media was created for anyway. A little research can help you find the perfect auto insurance match that will keep things simple and easy, just how you like it.
