With all of the different options for auto insurance in the United States, it’s no surprise that picking the right one can feel daunting. Perhaps you’ve avoided the decision making process by opting to stick with the same provider for the last several years or maybe you just decided to continue with your parent's insurance company. Well, you are not alone! In fact, more than 40% of people say they rarely check or compare car insurance rates.

Looking around for the best deal and a proper fit for your personal needs is important. Insurance is a big decision! You not only need to make sure you can afford to pay for your auto insurance every month, but you also want to be sure that you and your loved ones have the coverage you truly need.

When you’re looking for the perfect auto insurance match, make sure to do your research to find the perfect partner. After all, you’ll be with this carrier for months, potentially years, so you want to feel confident you made the right choice.

1. Compare prices

We don’t mean to be all about the money, but we know that the cost does matter. We strongly suggest you get a few different quotes and see how the prices stack up.

But, don't forget to also look at the amount of coverage you'll get from each provider. A super cheap monthly payment may seem like a great idea, but if you notice you’re getting substantially less coverage, it may not be worth the stress. A few extra dollars a month could go a long way in helping to pay any costs if you happen to get into an accident. That small bit of extra money upfront could mean hundreds of dollars are saved out of pocket after an accident.

2. Check out their customer service

Nothing can ruin a day quite like a car accident. We’ve all been there. That’s why you’ll want to look into the customer service of your insurance options. Some major things to consider:

  • A call center open past regular office hours (Who really has time to call while they’re at work?)
  • 24/7 roadside assistance (No one wants to be stranded in the middle of the night.)
  • Online chat

3. Search for easy online access

Everyone’s busy these days. From soccer practice to dinner with friends, you always seem to have something to do or somewhere to be. With all the hustle and bustle of today, it’s no surprise that people rely on companies to provide instant access to services online.

The insurance industry is no different! We recognize the importance and convenience of providing our customers with access to their insurance information straight from their smartphones. No hassle of waiting on hold for a representative or need to leave the comfort of your own home. As you're shopping around for an insurance company, online access could be a valuable feature to consider, especially if you are someone who is always on the go.

Can you download or print your insurance cards if yours happens to fall out of your wallet at the gas station? Can you start a claim online and skip the long waits on a phone call? Can you update your coverage online with a simple click? These are all things Say offers through our online portal, My Say, and are things you can look for in whatever provider you choose. Online access is a big way to save you time, so don’t overlook that perk.

4. Look into discounts

Yes, we mentioned the whole money thing already, but don't forget to check out what discounts each provider offers. We get that paying for car insurance each month can feel like a bummer as you watch your hard-earned dollars leave your account, so make sure that whoever you go with has some decent discounts to help offset the cost. Some helpful discounts to look for are:

  • Pay-in-full (Save money just for paying all at once. How great is that?)
  • Anti-theft (Most cars these days come equipped with anti-theft devices, so this is an easy one.)
  • Paperless (Save trees and save money. It’s a win-win.)
  • Advance Purchase (Just a week of planning ahead could save you a lot in the long run. Kudos to the early bird!)

PS: Say offers all of those discounts...wink wink. Check out our other discounts here.

Never jump into an auto insurance relationship without a little background research. I mean, you wouldn’t start dating someone without a little digging right? I’m pretty sure that’s what social media was created for anyway. A little research can help you find the perfect auto insurance match and keep things simple, just how you like it.
